In my ongoing quest for fascinating gems of information about digital and the new media world, I was sent the latest in a series of reports from Aegis Media called ‘Next Generation Media’. This agency is surely on its tiptoes keeping up with compiling trend updates on this brave new world, which continues to evolve rapidly by the day.
The report contains includes the following amazing facts; always handy for dropping into conversations:
- There are now 6 billion mobile subscriptions globally and 1 billion smartphones in use (i.e. devices, not people)
- Google is activating 1.3 million Android devices per day (0.3 million per day more than in June)
- Each new version of the iPhone sells as much as all previous versions combined – Apple is on course to sell over 2 million iPhone 5s (and has spent over $1 billion advertising the iPhone and iPad)
- Instagram, the photo-sharing platform now has over 100 million users (this has doubled since it was acquired by Facebook last June)
- Eight million people watched Felix Baumgartner’s high sky dive live on YouTube (the most watched event ever on YouTube)
- The Daily Mail is the world’s most visited English language newspaper website, and is profitable, with year on year revenues up 75%
- Meanwhile, the FT now has more digital subscribers than newspaper buyers
- EL James, of Fifty Shades of Grey author, is the best selling author ever on Amazon UK, surpassing JK Rowling
- There were more Tweets about the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, than for the whole of the Beijing Games (and in some countries, half of Olympic-related searches were on mobile devices)
Jaw-dropping stuff, and it’s incredible how far we have come in such a short space of time.
